The belief that science and religion are locked in permanent conflict is one of the most durable stories of our age. It shapes school corridors and news coverage, and it leaves many people with the assumption that they will eventually have to choose.

What actually drives the perception of a war between science and Christian faith? And more importantly: what are we really disagreeing about? Beneath the familiar flashpoints lies a deeper and far more interesting set of disagreements. The evening is an invitation to set the conflict myth aside and enter the more demanding conversation it has been obscuring.

All are welcome. No specialist background in science or theology is assumed.

Speaker

Nick Spencer is a senior fellow at Theos, a UK think tank on religion and public life. He is also a fellow of the International Society for Science and Religion. His books include Magisteria: The Entangled Histories of Science and Religion (Oneworld, 2023), Playing God: Science, Religion and the Future of Humanity (SPCK, 2024), and The Landscapes of Science and Religion (Oxford University Press, 2025). He hosts the podcast Reading Our Times and presented the BBC Radio 4 three-part series The Secret History of Science and Religion. He has written for publications including The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Independent, and New Statesman.
