Topic: What is truth? Real truth in a world of fake news, personal truth and science

Speaker: Rev. Dr Chris Mulherin

Date: Saturday, 24 February 2018

Time: 7:30pm

Venue: Tabor College, 181 Goodwood Rd, Millswood

Description: In this talk Chris Mulherin will examine the nature of truth in a world of Trumpian ‘fake news’ and Oprah Winfrey’s ‘personal truth’. Chris will introduce us to HUFPAT. No, it’s not a cute furry animal … it’s a hermeneutic, universal, fiduciary and provisional approach to truth. Chris will explain why scientific and theological knowledge are very similar in many ways and why confusion about the nature of science has led fundamentalists (secular and religious) into blind alleys when thinking about truth. HUFPAT affirms robust truth while at the same time recognises that, strictly speaking, we can’t be certain of anything.

In the end, all knowledge boils down to well considered faith.

Speaker: Chris Mulherin teaches philosophy at the University of Divinity and is ISCAST Executive Director. He is a jack of all trades and master of none: he has taught engineering, theology, apologetics, climate change and history of science.

He enjoys preaching and public speaking as well as helping people to be faithful followers of Jesus.
