Dr Marius Dorobantu is an Assistant Professor of Theology and Artificial Intelligence at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and a fellow of the International Society for Science and Religion (ISSR). His award-winning doctoral dissertation, at the University of Strasbourg, explored the potential theological implications of human-level artificial intelligence for the notions of human distinctiveness and the image of God. His first book, Artificial Intelligence and the Image of God: Are We More than Intelligent Machines? is in press with Cambridge University Press.
Between 2020 and 2023, Marius was a core member of the interdisciplinary team at the ISSR that ran the research project “Understanding Spiritual Intelligence: Psychological, Theological, and Computational Perspectives.” The project was supported with a large grant ($1 m) by the Templeton World Charity Foundation (TWCF), within the Diverse Intelligences initiative.
Between 2024 and 2027, Marius is co-directing another large research project at the ISSR, entitled “Repose, Insight, Activity: A Trinity of Spiritual Exercises,” part of TWCF’s The Science of Religious and Spiritual Exercises initiative.
