Kevin Koay

Dr Jun Yi (Kevin) Koay completed his PhD in radio astronomy at Curtin University, after which he took on research positions at the Dark Cosmology Center and Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen, followed by the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics in Taiwan. He is currently a contract researcher for Niigata University, Japan, while also serving part-time as Young Adult Pastor at South Perth Uniting Church and Visiting Chaplain at Curtin University. He is training towards ordination in the Uniting Church in Australia.

Kevin uses radio telescopes to study the physics and evolution of supermassive black holes in distant galaxies and in the center of our own galaxy. As part of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration, where he previously served as a coordinator of the Calibration and Error Analysis working group, Kevin helped capture the first images of supermassive black holes at event horizon scales. He was also actively involved in the commissioning and operations of the Greenland Telescope, a radio astronomical observatory in the Arctic.
